Gordon points out the sign reading, "Today is Newspaper Recycling Day," and explains why paper needs to be recycled. Elmo is hooked and wants to find some old newspapers to recycle, and spots Gina and Taylor with some; they add it to the other papers before Elmo can ask for them.
Cartoon A song tells the story of Max, who loves to chop down trees. One tree turns out to be a magic genie, who turns Max into a tree. Max soon grows respect for trees and once returned human, vows to never chop one down again.

SCENE 4 Held by Gina, Elmo now wants the tattered, Grouch newspaper Oscar has. Oscar takes his sweet time reading as Elmo points out that the truck to collect the newspapers will be coming any moment. Oscar finally finishes and Elmo rushes it over to the truck, just in time for his newspaper to be collected. He faints when he learns from Gordon that tomorrow is bottle recycling day. He revives briefly to announce the sponsors.
