It turns out that Mathilda was never going to be on the bus, and had wanted the Count to wait at the bus stop just so he could count the passing buses. | |

SCENE 3 | The Count waits at the phone when a construction worker needs to use it (hoping to tell her sister about the crossword puzzle she just did). She agrees to wait, but he starts counting the rings instead of answering. The two almost get into a physical conflict (Count: "Oh please, do not use fisticuffs!") until the construction worker gives up and Mr. Handford angrily hands the Count the phone. It's Mathilda, telling him she will be there in twenty minutes. The Count then grabs Mr. Handford's wrist, using his watch to count the seconds until her arrival. | |

Since then, they've gotten back together 103 times, counting each "hello" as a precious moment. They know that the sooner they say "goodbye," the sooner they can say "hello" again. They begin counting the different ways to say goodbye. | |
