SCENE 1 | Oscar takes Irvine to Hooper's Store for a grouchy treat. They peruse the special "Grouch Menu" and Irvine chooses some pickle ice cream cones with sardine topping. Mr. Handford serves the two and she gobbles hers up quickly and wants more, but Oscar tells her no or she might get a tummy ache. She hatches an idea and starts acting nice and kissing her uncle - in other words, the Grouch equivalent of throwing a tantrum. Oscar sees right through her plan and refuses to give in, but finds it isn't easy as he endures Irvine's sweetness. |

Cartoon | The Great Inventor Series: Science Salutes the Men and Women Who Have Changed the Way We Live. Cartoon about the days when people tried drinking ice cream soda before straws were invented. Awful messes were made getting more of the refreshment on their clothes than in their bellies. Until one day an ice cream parlor janitor noticed that when people brought their leashed pet anteaters in to enjoy an ice cream soda, the floor was always sucked completely clean. Realizing that nature had solved the problem, the janitor invented artificial anteater noses that strapped on over people's mouths... which eventually evolved into the modern straw. Artist: Bruce Cayard (First: Episode 2595) |

SCENE 3 | Mr. Handford obtains a copy of How to Handle Your Grouch Child by Brunelope Screech, a Grouch child expert. The book's very specific advice for Oscar is to jump up and down while shouting "Phooey" five times. A couple of kids count along, but it doesn't work. The book then advises him to jump 10 times now, and when that fails he does it 20 times. Irvine continues acting precious, so the book suggests that when all else fails, Oscar must be... nice to his niece! He refuses to do so ("I'm a Grouch, I've got my pride!"), but changes his mind when he sees how desperate the situation is. He isn't sure how to act nice, so Mr. Handford offers to help. |
