SCENE Big Bird welcomes us to Sesame Street, and gives clues to where he's going: Hooper's Store. He goes in, asks Alan for a birdseed milkshake, and learns that Alan will be taking a trip to Hawaii. The thought of Alan going away upsets Big Bird, because he won't be able to make his favorite kind of birdseed milkshake. Alan shows Big Bird the ad which he submitted to the newspaper: "Help Wanted. Looking for someone to run Hooper's Store for one week. Must be able to cook. Knowledge of the alphabet a plus. If interested, please come see Alan today."

SCENE, cont'd No one has shown up yet, but just then, Three Men in a Tub come in to answer the want ad. It turns out they've answered the right ad (for "Beefsticks, Breadsticks & Candlesticks"), but come to the wrong place.
4060g

4060h
SCENE, cont'd Another customer comes in. Alan assumes she's answering the ad, but she just wants a glass of pineapple juice. Just then, the wisecracking elephant, this time dressed as a "master chef" (who studied in Tuscany - get it?) tries to answer the want ad. He attempts to demonstrate the way he cooks an omelette, but his constant jumping is knocking the food off the shelves.
4060i

4060j
SCENE, cont'd The customer, who introduces herself as Natalie, tells the elephant to calm down, and demonstrates, in song, the way to make an omelette while keeping your cool. Now that the elephant is confident, he goes to work for Peanuts (an elephant restaurant).

4060l
SCENE, cont'd Alan is impressed with the way Natalie handled the nervous elephant, as well as her display of cooking skills. He approaches her and asks her if she'd like to work at Hooper's for a week while he's away. She agrees to take the job, and Alan goes off to pack. Big Bird feels bummed, because he knows being at Hooper's is going to be different, and he's not used to this kind of change. Natalie thinks it'll be exciting.

4060o
SCENE, cont'd Baby Bear comes in, asking Alan for "the usual," but then notices that Alan isn't here. At first, the adjustment to the new change is as hard for him as it is for Big Bird, which Natalie understands - after all, she loves porridge too. She then demonstrates the way she makes porridge: first she adds nuts, then peaches, then honey. Baby Bear's curiosity is piqued further and further, especially when she adds the honey (which bears love). He tries the porridge, and thinks it's not good ... but GREAT! He says Natalie can make his porridge any time, and leaves.
4060p

4060q
SCENE, cont'd So far, Natalie likes working at Hooper's. Big Bird is still very sad - he's still trying to get used to the change. Natalie sings a song about how things change over the seasons, which makes Big Bird feel better.
4060r
SCENE, cont'd Alan comes back, and asks Natalie if she'll take the job. Natalie first asks Big Bird what he thinks. He thinks he'll miss Alan, but will enjoy getting to know Natalie. Alan leaves again, and Natalie offers Big Bird a birdseed milkshake.

Notes[]

  • Natalie Portman was originally going to appear in three episodes as Natalie, but after this episode was taped, she began losing her voice, so Gabi took over Hooper's Store for the remaining episodes that Natalie was supposed to be in.[1] Portman's appearance clearly displays her ailing speech, although her two songs were noticeably recorded during a separate session.
  • Big Bird is worried about somebody else watching the store besides Alan, but Hooper's Store had already had three previous owners: Mr. Hooper, David, and Mr. Handford. In fact, this theme of "change," particularly in regards to the Hooper's Store environment, is very reminiscent of the episode which dealt with saying goodbye to Mr. Hooper.
