COLD OPEN | "What's the Word on the Street?" -- tricycle
Muppets | Elmo rides a tricycle and sings "Riding My Tricycle" to express his joy and pride in the activity. (First: Episode 4083)
SCENE | Elmo greets the viewer, and says he plans to ride his tricycle all day. Big Bird encounters him, and expresses interest in riding Elmo's tricycle. Elmo agrees to let Big Bird do so, but as soon as Big Bird sits down on the tricycle, it breaks!
SCENE cont'd |
Elmo is sad about his broken tricycle and Big Bird feels bad because he didn't mean to break it. Gordon helps them both feel better by reminding them that they can take the broken tricycle to the Fix-It Shop! Oscar objects to this ("If it's broken, don't fix it!"), and asks if he can have Elmo's broken tricycle. Oscar pretends not to mind when Elmo says no, because "It's a lose-lose situation!" As they head for the Fix-It Shop, however, Oscar mumbles to himself "what a waste!"
SCENE cont'd |
Meanwhile, Maria is busy working on Mrs. Crustworthy's toaster, which Mrs. Crustworthy desperately needs for the Toaster Lovers Society luncheon - "or I'm toast!" Elmo, Big Bird and Gordon approach the shop with the broken tricycle, and Maria says she'll fix it right after she fixes the toaster - but Elmo doesn't know what to do while waiting for the tricycle to be fixed. Big Bird offers to help Elmo think of something.
SCENE cont'd |
Mrs. Crustworthy finds it hard to wait for her toaster to be fixed. Then she decides to play "The Toast Lovers' Participatory Popping Game", which is pretending you're a piece of toast in a toaster. The waiting pays off, because now the toaster is ready! Maria then sets her eyes on the pile of tricycle parts - "Where do I begin?"
SCENE cont'd |
Elmo and Big Bird try to think of what they can do while they wait, but all they can think about is how much they both wish Elmo could be riding his tricycle. As Elmo talks, Big Bird motions as if he were riding a pretend tricycle. This gives Elmo the idea to begin riding a pretend tricycle, too.
SCENE cont'd |
They both ride pretend tricycles while singing about their imaginary rides, describing all that they see and all they can do. Pretend tricycles are lots of fun because they can ride them anywhere their imagination takes them, even under the sea!
SCENE cont'd |
Elmo has so much fun riding his pretend tricycle with Big Bird that when his real tricycle is fixed, he decides to keep playing with Big Bird as they ride their pretend tricycles to the moon!
