COLD OPEN | "What's the Word on the Street?" -- family
SCENE | Telly, Zoe and Rosita are all excited as they welcome the viewer to Sesame Street, because today they're playing "house." They can't wait to pretend to be a big happy family. Rosita will be the mommy, Zoe will be the baby, and Telly will be the dog and the daddy (even though he'd rather be the dog). They sing their happy family song.
SCENE cont'd |
As they walk over to their tent, they pass Alan, whom they pretend is "Uncle Sheldon." Since he's setting a table right now, they decide they'd better do their chores too.
SCENE cont'd |
The three monsters head into their blanketed household and focus on which chores to tackle first. Rosita suggests they dust the lamp. Telly wants to be the lamp, even though he's already the dog and the daddy. Zoe wants to dust the lamp, even though she's the baby. Rosita insists that she dust the lamp, which escalates into an argument between Zoe and Rosita. At this point, no one in the happy family seems to be happy - which means they must be the angry family. Telly the lamp suggests that they cooperate and dust him together - until he sneezes them off.
SCENE cont'd |
The next chore: vacuuming the rug. Now Telly wants to be the vacuum. Zoe and Rosita argue again over who will do the vacuuming, which makes them the frustrated family until Telly suggests they take turns. When Zoe gets her turn, something gets stuck in the vacuum! The monsters sing their happy family song again.
SCENE cont'd |
Now that the chores are done, it's time to take a drive in the happy car - but all three of them think they should be the one to drive, and have a different destination in mind: Telly wants to go to the movies and the dog show, while Zoe prefers the beach, and Rosita the zoo. Once again, they're an angry, bickering family. Their arguing leads them outside, where "Uncle Sheldon" calls a time-out. The monsters think they can't play house together any more if they're not a happy family. Alan tells them that families aren't always happy, and working out their problems together will bring them closer and make them happier.
SCENE cont'd |
The monsters huddle together and work out a plan: "Uncle Sheldon" will drive the car! Alan gets in the "driver's seat" and starts to sing "Let's Go Driving" - when Zoe interrupts him because they forgot to put on their seatbelts. He starts singing again, but Telly stops him because he has to put his key in the ignition. Finally, Rosita wonders where they're going. "Sheldon" is taking them to a movie about a dog show at the zoo, by the beach! The big happy family "drives" off, singing "Let's Go Driving."
