COLD OPEN | What's the Word on the Street?: Empathy
SCENE | Oscar is going to take Slimey to the mud hole today and goes into his can to retrieve Slimey's hiking boot. Soon after, the Three Little Pigs run into frame, screaming in fear of the Big Bad Wolf. They escape before the Wolf reaches them. He spots Slimey and, seeing no pigs around, decides to huff and puff him. With an operatic "huff and puff," he sends Slimey flying across the street.
SCENE cont'd | Slimey lands in Snuffy's bowl of spaghetti. When he and Big Bird ask Slimey how he got there, he fearfully refuses to answer. Big Bird hypothesizes the wind blew him to them and the bring him back to Oscar.
SCENE cont'd | Oscar comes back to find Slimey gone. Snuffy and Big Bird explain what happened. Oscar claims he didn't feel any wind, but notices Slimey shaking. He thinks he's cold and goes to get his sweater too, while Big Bird and Snuffy go back to their food. The pigs run back, with the wolf in pursuit. When they outrun him again, he huffs and puffs Slimey again.
SCENE cont'd | Slimey lands back in Snuffy's food. This time, Alan witnesses it. Although Snuffy and Big Bird think it's the wind again, Alan notes it's not windy at all. He notices that when the pigs and wolf run by, Slimey begins to shake. Alan asks him if the Big Bad Wolf is the problem and Slimey admits to the truth. The fairy tale characters pass by once more and the wolf gets "winded" from chasing the pigs. Slimey's friends defend him when the Wolf tries to huff and puff him again. He ends up blowing Snuffy away instead. Alan brings Slimey back home.
SCENE cont'd | A bruised Snuffy has landed at the stoop. Oscar is told about what's been happening to his worm and gets furious. When the Wolf shows up, they tell him he can't just huff and puff whoever he wants. The Wolf has a different view, as huffing and puffing is what he does ("It's my Raison d'être.") and sings a song about his beliefs. They then point out that in addition to huffing and puffing them, he also hurt Slimey and Snuffy's feelings. The Wolf had never realized the emotional ramifications of his actions and apologizes for his behavior. But, what can he huff and puff that won't hurt anyone? The pigs arrive, taking their story break and offer some bubbles to the group. The Wolf decides to take up bubble blowing instead and makes some for his new friends.
