COLD OPEN What's the Word on the Street?: Stubborn

SCENE Big Bird welcomes the viewer, when he notices Gordon repairing one of the doorknobs to 123 Sesame Street's front door. Susan alerts Gordon that the window is broken as well and that he should hurry with the door (so she can get to work). She states that they need a superintendent for the building, but Gordon insists he can fix it. He gets the doorknob onto the door, but it comes off when Susan shuts it. Chris asks if the door is fixed so he can go to work too and too points out the broken window. He also suggests they get a super, but backs away when he sees Gordon's stubborn reaction and uses the back door. Chris lets the window slam shut, causing the mailbox to fall from the wall.

SCENE cont'd The Count appears, having heard about everything breaking and has come to count the broken things. Chris goes to take the garbage out, but the gate breaks off in his hand. The Count adds that to the total and his trademark thunder and lightning cause the drain pipe to break off and fall over. The Count offers a solution - get a super, then leaves. Chris points out he said the same thing, then takes Big Bird to get a birdseed milkshake.

SCENE cont'd Gordon again makes it clear he doesn't need a super. Suddenly, a heroic theme plays and Super Grover lands onto the stoop, having heard there's call for a super. His impact causes a lamp to break from the wall. Gordon explains the misunderstanding and Grover thinks he'd make a "super super" and tries to help fix things. Gordon points out the door won't open and Grover tries some super huffing and puffing to open the doors, but can't seem to do it. Gordon blows on them too to show him the idea is silly, causing the other door to collapse inward. Grover goes to help another building in distress, but finding himself out of breath, hails a taxi instead of taking flight.

SCENE cont'd Big Bird brings Maria to the building, having heard the crash. The Count also appears, adding the newly broken items to his total. Gordon finally admits he can't fix everything alone and needs some help. Maria and the rest help return the building to its original state while singing a cooperation song ("Together We Can Get It Done").
SCENE cont'd With the building restored, the Count assures Gordon if he ever needs help, he can ask. Gordon is impressed by Maria's dedication to fixing things and offers her the super job, which she gladly takes. Big Bird rushes off to tell Snuffy the news. Susan returns home and is grateful to find Maria is the new super. Suddenly, the flower boxes unhinge from the wall and Maria goes to fix them. Gordon tells his wife, "You see honey? I told you we needed a super!"
