COLD OPEN What's the Word on the Street?: Insect
(First: Episode 4165)

SCENE At dusk, Chris welcomes the viewer to Sesame Street as he closes Hooper's Store, and listens to all the nighttime sounds. Telly and Baby Bear pass by him with a net and a jar, and tell him that they're trying to catch fireflies. Chris goes home, and Telly and Baby Bear tell the viewer to help them out by pointing out any fireflies they see. One flies above their head, and they scramble to catch it as they follow it near and far.

Gina leads Big Bird, Abby Cadabby and Super Chicken in a wing exercise ("wingercise"), and invites Telly and Baby Bear to join them. They'd rather just sit and watch, and as they do, they notice the firefly "wingercising" along with them. They swing their net, and accidentally catch Gina.

Maria and Luis sit on the steps with some kids. Just as they're about to sing something, Telly and Baby Bear ask them if they've seen the firefly, which inspires Luis to play "The Firefly Song." Maria points out the Spanish word for firefly, luciernaga, and everyone tries saying it. Telly and Baby Bear wait until the song is done before they continue their firefly chase.

The chase leads them to the front of the laundromat, where Telly gets an idea to use a flashlight to attract the firefly. The method works, but then they start to notice that the captured firefly doesn't look so happy and bright anymore. They wonder why he looks so sad. Leela encounters them, and instead of telling them explicitly why the firefly is sad, she suggests that they all pretend to be fireflies, who fly around and suddenly end up in a jar. They realize that there's not much flying room in a jar, so they decide to set the firefly free.
After Leela goes home, they decide that pretending to be fireflies is more fun than catching them, and sing the "Firefly Song" again.
