COLD OPEN | Rosita tells the viewer today they will be celebrating the Fourth of July. Grover arrives, decked out in red, white, and blue gear, but he claims this is merely his normal Tuesday attire.
SCENE 1 | Elmo, Abby, and Rudy see the street is all decorated for some sort of celebration, but they don't know what. They ask Alan, who tells them it's the Fourth of July, alternatively known as America's birthday. The youngsters decide to celebrate it the way they usually celebrate a birthday.
SCENE 1 cont'd | They all fetch party hats and Abby poofs up a flag-shaped birthday cake for the occasion. They then need to find some presents to give America, but can't leave the cake alone. They recruit Cookie Monster to stand guard (against their better judgement).
SCENE 1 cont'd | Elmo's brought a puzzle, Abby has a stuffed animal, and Rudy brings socks; they all agree they need to find a better present for the country. Grover wanders past, looking for the perfect spot to watch the fireworks later. He pulls out a map of the United States to help them find something they can get the country. He believes a mountain would make a fine gift and goes back to looking for a view point. Alan and Charlie come by and inform the others that the holiday isn't like normal birthdays; it's a way of celebrating the place they live in. They add the best way to honor the day is to do something kind for their neighborhood.
SCENE 1 cont'd | The gang assembles everyone in the neighborhood (including Telly, Rosita, Big Bird, Baby Bear, and Charlie's mom) to clean up a large pile of trash by the stoop as they all sing a patriotic tune. Afterwards, Abby thinks of another kind thing they can do - give all the trash they've collected to Oscar the Grouch. Before heading to the gathering to watch the fireworks, they realize the grave error they made in leaving their cake in the watch of Cookie Monster.
SCENE 1 cont'd | They rush back to the yard, where Cookie proudly declares he didn't eat the whole cake...only half of it. Grover finds the perfect place to watch the skies as other friends and neighbors congregate to watch the big fireworks show.
