SCENE 1 | Nina shows Elmo and Abby pictures from a "Tough Mud Race" she participated in. Her pictures illustrate how the obstacle course had her go over, under, around, and through various things. Abby believes they should make their own obstacle course on Sesame Street, which Nina dubs a "Tough Monster Race." Grover rushes in, claiming to be an expert on "popsicle races." Nina tells them that to make their race, they'll need some supplies.
SCENE 1 cont'd | Nina tells them that they'll need things they can go over, under, around, and through with. Grover is discouraged that they don't have anything suitable, but is constantly reminded of their problem-solving motto. They first employ a broom and some laundry baskets to go over, then a blanket and chairs to go under, then pool noodles (attached to plungers) to go around, and finally a cardboard box to go through. To help the youngsters remember what to do during the race, Nina sings a short tune about the directions.
SCENE 1 cont'd | The obstacle course has been set up across Sesame Street, as a small crowd of people and monsters (including Herry Monster) gather to watch. Grover shows up covered in mud, believing it was a requirement. Guy Smiley appears to commentate as the race begins. Using Nina's song as a reminder, Elmo, Abby, and Grover go through the course using the various directions. After they reach the finish line, Grover celebrates with a muddy group hug.
