COLD OPEN | Elmo is with his mommy and daddy to demonstrate today's topic of families, and he initiates a couple of group hugs.
SCENE 1 | In the yard, Elmo and Abby are drawing pictures of their families. Abby accidentally got a blueberry smoothie smudge on her drawing, so she refashioned it into a doggie. Dalia and Clem stop by and introduce their foster child, Karli, explaining that they're looking after her while her mom gets better. Elmo and Abby welcome Karli as their new friend and neighbor and invite her to draw with them. Dalia and Clem let her stay while they go over to Hooper's Store. In keeping with the theme of families, Karli decides to draw a picture of her mom.
SCENE 1 cont'd | Karli and Abby have finished their drawings, and Elmo has embellished his to depict his family playing "monster ball." Karli comments that she loves the sport and once scored three goals in one game. Karli then shows a drawing of her mom, which Elmo and Abby compliment. Karli plans to give the picture to her mom when she next sees her, and in the meantime, it will help her remember her. She gets an idea and takes her new friends to Hooper's Store.
SCENE 1 cont'd | Dalia and Clem chat with Chris when Karli and friends come in, looking for a box to collect memories of her mom. Dalia and Clem love the concept, and Chris notes that he has plenty of boxes. Elmo and Abby want to make their own boxes too.
SCENE 1 cont'd | Abby fills her treasure box with a dinosaur badge from a trip to the science museum with her dad, a photo of her and Rudy, and the old wing mittens that her mommy knitted. Elmo's box includes some artifacts from his mom and dad, plus his lucky Joe DiMonstrio baseball card. Karli's box contains her mom's scarf, some dried flowers, a puzzle piece, and a bracelet with charms symbolizing things she loves: pizza, seashells, and monster ball. Elmo comments that their boxes look too "boxy," so Karli suggests that they decorate them.
SCENE 1 cont'd | The group has finished their boxes when Dalia and Clem return. Karli shows that each decorated side of her box represents a memory: her mom's favorite flowers, their favorite park, musical notes to symbolize her mom's love of music, and a bird because they both love birds. Clem compliments their creativity, and they all go off for a game of monster ball.
