COLD OPEN | Elmo and Abby introduce today's theme of gardens in a game of eye spy.
SCENE 1 | Zoe, Elmo, and Charlie meet up with Tamir in the community garden, who sings "We Can Grow Together." The three notice how everyone plants different things in the garden: Bert's growing oats, Big Bird's growing yellow flowers, but Oscar has a smellier bed. This leads into another verse.
SCENE 1 cont'd | Alan makes his way to the community garden and demonstrates what he has been growing: fruits and vegetables that are commonly grown in Japan. When Zoe asks what Japan is, Alan explains that his great grandmother grew up there before moving to the US. Alan shows off a few of the plants he started growing, including the "ever popular" daikon. Thrilled by Alan's creation, Elmo and Zoe begin to wonder how they can spread the word to more people. Tamir then has the brilliant idea of opening a garden stand, and Alan promises to make pickled daikon.
SCENE 1 cont'd | While they're preparing in Hooper's Store, Charlie offers to help. Alan tells her she can put the sliced daikon into jars while he heats up the brine. Zoe then overhears and asks about what exactly brine is. Alan explains what it is, showing his containing water, sugar, salt, vinegar, and turmeric. While the brine is cooking, Alan shows the kids a photo album of his family, explaining different things about it. Alan ends his talk by saying he's proud of his Japanese-American culture.
SCENE 1 cont'd | Alan's dish is almost ready! He pours the brine into the daikon and waits for it to cool. Finally, they all go to the garden stand to show off their food. Each kid tries some pickled daikon and thinks it's great. Charlie points out that what's really great is the fact they they made it with vegetables from their own community garden.
