COLD OPEN | Today is all about sports. Can you guess what sport Elmo will be playing? Grover guesses ice hockey, given Elmo's sleeveless shirt. Elmo then gets out a ball (basketball), and Grover guesses football. Of course, Elmo is going to be playing basketball. Grover then asks Elmo where his bat is.
SCENE 1 | Elmo, Rosita, and Gabrielle excitedly practice basketball, as they are joining a basketball team. Their teammates (Charlie, Kenley, and Brandon) and Coach Jones arrive, and everyone introduces themselves.
SCENE 1 cont'd | The team begins by practicing dribbling, bouncing the ball to a wall and back. Jones tells the team that when their name is called, then they can start dribbling. Jones doesn't call out Rosita's name, but she does call a "Rosie" despite there not being one on the team, and Rosita gets frustrated she didn't get a turn. Elmo realizes what happened, that Jones accidentally called Rosita, "Rosie." Rosita says she's never called Rosie, so Gabrielle and Elmo insist that she correct Jones. However, Rosita is hesitant.
SCENE 1 cont'd | The team is then called for a game of passing, where team members call out a teammate's name before passing it to them. Rosita is called Rosie several times throughout the game, even by the other teammates, but each time is unable to correct anyone. Rosita's anxiousness causes her to miss a pass, and now she's even more frustrated. Her name is Rosita, and she loves her name. Gabrielle relates, saying she doesn't like it when people call her Gabi.
SCENE 1 cont'd | The team is then called for a game of shooting, where the team forms a queue and each member shoots until they miss. Rosita makes two consecutive shots but is caught off guard by a chant of "Rosie!" by Jones and her teammates, and she overshoots her third shot completely. Rosita vents to Gabrielle once again, this time explaining why her name is special to her: her mom's name is Rosa, and in Spanish Rosita means "little Rosa." Gabrielle again encourages Rosita to tell Jones her real name, but Rosita thinks Jones might get mad at her if she's corrected. Gabrielle says that grown-ups make mistakes too, and that Rosita needs to have courage and stand up for herself.
SCENE 1 cont'd | Everyone hypes Rosita up for her next shot, but Rosita is visibly upset and won't start. Jones asks her if she's okay, and Rosita remains silent. Jones calls a timeout and once again asks Rosita how she's doing. Rosita finally tells Jones what she's been wanting to say: that her name is Rosita, not Rosie. Jones apologizes and is really glad Rosita told her, acknowledging the courage it took for Rosita to speak up. "Our names are a big part of who we are, and it's important to get them right," says Jones. Jones then calls the rest of the team to tell them her mistake and to correct Rosita's name. Rosita then sings "Proud of My Name" joined by the rest of the team.
