SCENE 1 | Cookie Monster is making alphabet-themed treats and decorations for Alphabet Day, but this year, Elmo has the most important job. He's gonna sing the alphabet song in front of everyone for the Alphabet Day celebration. |

SCENE 1 cont'd | Nina, Charlie, and Rosita arrive and introduce the monsters to their friend Mathis, whom everyone communicates with using their hands. Elmo asks why, and Mathis explains that they're speaking American Sign Language because he is deaf. Mathis' mom then explains to Elmo that she is not deaf but is interpreting. Rosita relates, as sometimes she interprets for her abuela, who mostly speaks Spanish. Elmo wonders if ASL has an alphabet, and Mathis signs each letter as Elmo sings the Alphabet Song. This gives Elmo the idea for him and Mathis to do the same thing at the Alphabet Day celebration. Mathis agrees, saying he's proud to be deaf and loves to share sign language. Elmo then learns how to sign "thank you." Mathis then teaches Cookie Monster how to sign his favorite letter. |

SCENE 1 cont'd | Alan then arrives with smoothies, signing "smoothies for everyone." Alan's ASL practice inspires Elmo to practice the language too. Mathis thanks Elmo, saying that when his friends learn ASL, it makes him feel like they all get to know him. Everyone then gets to decorating, and Elmo asks Mathis how he dances without hearing the music. Mathis explains that he feels the vibrations of the music. Mathis and Charlie then show Elmo dance moves they made up. This gives Elmo the idea to dance the Alphabet song, and Rosita suggests she play the guitar. |
