COLD OPEN | Elmo is with his mommy and daddy to demonstrate today's topic of families, and he initiates a couple of group hugs. (First: Episode 5127)
SCENE 1 | Biff and Sully tell Charlie, Meredith, and Victor that the leak in their apartment will be fixed by sundown... Tuesday. Alan, Big Bird, Tamir, and Elmo walk in on the family, whose apartment won't be fixed in time for Shabbat dinner. The three teach the kids about Shabbat, which lasts from Friday at sundown to when the stars come out Saturday night. The family, like many Jewish families, share a special meal every week. Charlie is disappointed, expressing how special the meal is to her, but Victor points out that they can still have the Shabbat dinner elsewhere. Alan suggests holding it in the yard, and they invite all their friends.
SCENE 1 cont'd | The group gathers food for the meal, including challah, a traditional Jewish bread Victor learned to bake from his bubbe (grandmother). Charlie teaches Tamir, Elmo, and Alan how to braid the challah. Charlie then applies egg wash (confusing Elmo, who thinks the dough would get soggy from washing it), and Elmo shakes on some sesame seeds. The group continues to gather things, including more food and a Kiddush cup gifted by Charlie's great-grandfather, Harry. Elmo is ready to eat the challah, but first they must say the blessing over the candles, the grape juice, and the challah, as well as wait until sundown.
SCENE 1 cont'd | After sundown, the group (plus Mae, Louie, Kayla, and Granny Bird) welcomes Shabbat by lighting candles and saying a blessing in Hebrew. Elmo thinks Hebrew sounds beautiful. Victor and Meredith say the blessing their family wrote for Charlie, as well as for the other kids at the table. Then, they say a blessing over the juice and challah, and finally, they eat.
