SCENE 1 Elmo and Abby find Charlie and Tamir making a peace tree, which Elmo mishears as "peach tree." Charlie and Tamir explain that a peace tree is made of paper, and everyone adds a leaf to show what they'll do to treat people fairly and kindly. Charlie shares that they made one at school for Martin Luther King Jr. day, and Elmo and Abby recall learning in preschool that MLK was a great leader. Tamir adds that he stood up against racism, something Elmo and Abby are not a fan of. Charlie and Tamir teach the other two about MLK's famous speech, "I Have a Dream," and Charlie shows real footage of the speech on her tablet. Tamir explains that because MLK used peaceful ways to bring people together and make the world a better place, a peace tree would be a good way to celebrate him. Tamir and Charlie have already made their leaves. Tamir's shows himself as a superhero, because he promises to stand up for himself when he's treated unfairly because of his skin color, and Charlie's depicts herself inviting everyone during recess, ensuring no one is left out because of how they look.

SCENE 1 cont'd Elmo and Abby feel inspired to create their own leaves, but they aren't sure what to draw. The two overhear Gabrielle and Rosita, and find them coloring in the community center. The two show off a book they read at school: My Daddy, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.. This book inspired Rosita to draw a picture of her and her family together on her leaf, and she shares that she's proud of her Mexican heritage. She also promises to learn about Gabrielle and her family, which leads to Gabrielle sharing her leaf of herself expressing herself by singing and writing poems. Abby then realizes what she wants to draw: herself making art with her friends, promising to always share art supplies. Elmo is still unsure...

SCENE 1 cont'd Elmo meets up with Alan at Hooper's Store and recounts everything he learned about MLK. To help Elmo figure out what to draw, Alan shares his leaf, depicting a peace sign. Tamir swoops in to collect the leaves and learns that Elmo hasn't drawn one yet. Tamir tells Elmo he'd expected him to have drawn a heart, since Elmo's the kindest monster he knows. Elmo loves this idea and draws one just in time. At the peace tree, now full of leaves, everyone sings "Each Leaf is a Promise" and wishes the viewer a happy Martin Luther King Jr. Day.
