Equus is a Tony Award-winning stage play by Peter Shaffer (Amadeus). It centers on the psychiatric treatment of a young man, who has a religious and sexual fixation on horses.

The play premiered on Broadway in 1974, starring Anthony Hopkins as the psychiatrist. It became a film in 1977 and was revived on the West End in 2007 (and transferred to Broadway a year later).

References[]

  • The Saturday Night Live broadcast of March 13, 1976 has Scred and King Ploobis interrupt guest host Anthony Perkins to complain about their treatment. Perkins tells them it's just how show business works, bringing up a bit he did earlier: "Look at me. I mean, four weeks ago I was on Broadway in Equus. Now they've got me swallowing flies on late night TV."
