Ernie and Bert's New Kitten is a 1990 Sesame Street storybook featuring Ernie and Bert.
Plot[]
Ernie and Bert visit Susan. Her cat is having kittens and they ask her if they could take one home once they're big enough to leave their mother. Susan explains all of the responsibilities that come with raising kittens, such as feeding them and cleaning up the cat litter. Ernie thinks this will be fun, however, and a few weeks later the kittens can now be taken from their mother. Bert and Ernie return and choose a striped kitten, which Susan suggests they name it Bernie, for both of their names. They agree, liking the idea and they take the kitten home.
They soon find out that Susan was right that kittens are a lot of work. Ernie spills the cat litter, and Bernie tips over his water dish and food bowl, requiring the duo to clean up. For several mornings afterward, Bernie awakens Bert for breakfast. Bernie proves to be quite playful and causes Bert's paperclips to fall off a shelf. Ernie is mostly amused by Bernie's antics, until he discovers that Bernie has chewed a hole in Rubber Duckie. Furious, he tells Bernie off, though fortunately, Bert fixes Rubber Duckie with some tape. Ernie says that Bernie reminds him of himself and that's why he and Bert can't stay angry with him for too long. Both Bert and Ernie hold the purring Bernie.
