Ernie has drawn what he claims is a llama on an easel. Bert says he's known a million llamas, but not one of them looked like that ("My sister can draw a llama better than that!"). Ernie decides to settle this by asking a live llama, seen via film footage. The llama stares at the camera in close-up while Ernie considers its proportions. Finally deciding he can't draw a llama, he'll draw a picture of a 3 instead. When he asks what a 3 looks like, they both turn their attention to the camera to watch the "Jazz #3" cartoon.
In part 2, Ernie draws what looks like a squiggle, so Bert recommends that he watch the "Jazz #3" film again.
After a second viewing, Ernie says drawing a 3 is now easy as pie. He adds a stump to his previously drawn squiggle, prompting Bert to ask, "You call that a 3?" Ernie replies, "No, I call that a tree."
