Famous Monsters 191

Famous Monsters of Filmland is a magazine about the cinematic arts that was published from 1958 to 1983, and again from 1993 to 2008. The magazine was one of the first specifically designed around the concept of fandom, as well as arriving when monster movies were attracting pop culture attention, primarily as a subject of humor or novelty as with Monster Rally and "The Monster Mash."

Appearances[]

Issue #159 (November 1979) featured a six-page article, "The Maniacal Muppet Monsters", discussing the release of The Muppet Movie. In keeping with the magazine's genre emphasis, it identified the human guest stars entirely by their appearances in horror or scifi-themed productions. Editor Forrest J. Ackerman's penchant for puns is displayed as he itemizes Miss Piggy's alleged credits including The Pig Sleep, Swiney Todd, and Ham Stoker's Porkula. Ackerman recounts the article as being the result of a visit to his house by Richard Hunt, other "technicians who work the Muppet characters," and John Landis.

Characters from The Dark Crystal, including Aughra, the Chamberlain, and a Mystic, appeared on the cover of issue #191 in March 1983.
