Farley's family has been seen inconsistently in various incarnations over the years in Sesame Street episodes and books.
Farley's mother and father made their only puppet appearances in Episode 0258, but since then, have been interpreted in illustrated books differently. Likewise, his immediate and extended family have been seen in a wide range of variations.
The family was most comprehensively presented in the original 1983 edition of The Sesame Street Word Book in a family tree illustrated by Tom Leigh. Here, Farley's mother is green instead of the blue version from 1971, while his father is the same orange as his puppet version. His father is shown to be the progeny of orange and blue parents named Smith (implying that this is Farley's surname as well), while his mother is a product of a lavender couple named Jones.
Farley also has lavender siblings named Freddie and Betsy, a cousin from his mother's side named Peter (son of Aunt Sharon and Uncle Henry), and cousins from his father's side named Henrietta and Hortense (the children of Aunt Bessie and Uncle John). A cat named Rollo and Spot the dog are also pictured members of the family.
His brother Freddie had previously appeared in The Sesame Street Dictionary, and again later in the 1994 book Rosita's Calico Cat, but as much younger than Farley and matching his brother's complexion in contrast to the 1983 book. The family tree is the only appearance of their sister Betsy.
One of Farley's grandfathers also appeared in The Sesame Street Dictionary, under the entry for "young," but he doesn't match either version from the Word Book.
