Farscape 1 is John Crichton's space module on Farscape, from which the show takes its name.
Designed by Crichton and his best friend D.K., the module is part of an experiment to test if a manned spacecraft can exponentially increase its speed using only a planet's gravitational pull. The experiment garners lots of press, and Crichton and D.K. are even featured in Scientific American. The module is ultimately launched by an IASA shuttle at Cape Canaveral, Florida, in the series premiere.
With Crichton on board, the launch initially appears to be successful. However, as he continues to pick up speed, he encounters an electromagnetic wave. Despite warnings from IASA mission control to abort, Crichton loses control of Farscape 1 and is pulled into a wormhole.
Crichton emerges at the other side of the galaxy and into the middle of a space battle. Upon entry, he accidentally collides with a Peacekeeper ship, killing Captain Bialar Crais' brother. He eventually comes across Moya, a Leviathan carrying a group of prisoners currently in the midst of an attempted jailbreak, and parks Farscape 1 in her hangar bay.
Over the course of the series, Crichton upgrades Farscape 1 in order to adapt to life in space. Additionally, with the help of the Ancients, Farscape 1 is outfitted with technology that allows it to properly travel through wormholes. Aside from Crichton, those who've ridden in the module include Scorpius, Staleek, and Bekhesh.
