SCENE 1 A painter (Ellen Greene) asks Oscar to keep an eye on her "WET PAINT" sign while she goes to get another paintbrush; Oscar reluctantly complies. David comes by and sees the sign, assuming it's part of Oscar's latest scheme, which Oscar denies. David picks up the sign and starts asking where the wet paint is, when the painter returns and admonishes David for ruining her sign. Oscar remarks, "That's what I like about life - things get all messed up sometimes without any effort at all."

Later Cookie Monster comes disguised as Doctor Monster and gives Ernie a medical checkup. After the checkup, Ernie asks what he owes Doctor Monster. By sheer coincidence, his bill is one apple.

SCENE 3 Susan finds it odd when Oscar describes what a wonderful day it is today. She soon learns his positive disposition is because today is "Trumpet Afternoon," the day Bob gives trumpet lessons. She and Olivia are unnerved by the loud, amateur trumpet blasts coming from Bob's apartment, which even causes the two to argue (to Oscar's delight).

Suddenly, Dizzy Gillespie takes the seat next to Oscar, who thinks his bent trumpet might make for some poor performance. A star-struck David asks him to play something and Dizzy blows out a jazzy tune on his horn. Oscar isn't as impressed as David.
