SCENE 1 Big Bird teases that some special guests will be visiting the street today. He reads a book of "Little Miss Muffet," then announces Miss Muffet and the Spider will be their special guests, performing a live version of their nursery rhyme! Miss Muffet (Fran Brill) arrives to thunderous applause, but she has some news to report - Stanley, the spider, isn't coming; he's out of town taking a vacation (his first in 25 years). Big Bird is disappointed and suggests she perform the rhyme solo. She points out that she can't frighten herself, so Big Bird confirms that if he can find a new spider, the nursery rhyme can continue as planned.

Miss Muffet isn't sure what to do while they wait, knowing only to eat curds and whey ("That's all they wrote."). She asks Big Bird what he likes to do, and he replies that he enjoys saying the alphabet. Miss Muffet has never heard of the alphabet, so she follows along as Big Bird recites it. She finds it very riveting and asks to do it again, then again. Stanley finally shows up and is ready to go, but Miss Muffet is busy saying the alphabet again.
