CNN ABCs of COVID-19 titlecard

The ABCs of COVID-19 is a series of CNN town hall specials hosted by Dr. Sanjay Gupta and Erica Hill, along with Sesame Street’s Big Bird.

First Special[]

The special which focused on the COVID-19 pandemic aired on Saturday, April 25, 2020 at 9am ET on CNN, CNN International, CNN en Español and CNN.com.

The special also featured Elmo, Grover, Abby Cadabby, Rosita, Cookie Monster, Louie, Oscar the Grouch, Count von Count and Bert as well as appearances by Sesame Street’s Alan Muraoka (as Alan) and Sesame Workshop's Dr. Rosemarie Truglio (Senior VP of Curriculum and Content).


Second Special[]

A second special was originally scheduled for May 30, 2020 at 10am ET, but was preempted by other news coverage and delayed until June 6th. The town hall special was retitled "Coming Together" with a new focus on racism. A second town hall special focusing on COVID-19 eventually aired on CNN on June 13, 2020.

The special featured Big Bird, Elmo, Grover, Abby Cadabby, Count von Count, Cookie Monster, Louie, Raya, Rosita, Zoe and some Muppet chickens. Dr. Rosemarie Truglio (Senior VP of Curriculum and Content for Sesame Workshop) also appeared. The special featured a new original song about how children can protect themselves during the coronavirus pandemic (featuring Gupta on the accordion). The special also included a reference to Twiddlebugs when talking about the size of the virus.

Third Special[]

The third special aired on CNN at 9 am on December 19, 2020 and covered how people are handling the holiday season.

The special begins with the characters sharing what they'll be doing for the holidays. Big Bird shares that Granny Bird will be teaching him and Alan how to bake birdseed fruitcake, Oscar is keeping the tradition of staying alone in his can, while Zoe is making painted rocks for the essential workers in her neighborhood, and Cookie Monster is learning how his friends celebrate, particularly their foods (Rosita's Three Kings Cake, Ellen's Sugar Plum Pie, Elmo's Christmas Cookies).

Notably, the special includes Dr. Anthony Fauci, director, National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases.

Louie is collecting food for those in need. Super Grover, Abby Cadabby, and Rosita also appear.
