Sandwich

Gonzo consults with a sandwich in Muppets from Space.

Sandwiches are a popular food dish created by placing assorted meats, cheese, and/or vegetables, or other substances, between two slices of bread. The food is named after John Montague, the Earl of Sandwich, who devised it as a convenient way to eat lunch while continuing to gamble at cards. This momentous moment in culinary history, enabling schoolchildren everywhere to carry their lunches in brown bags with ease, was recreated in an animated insert on Sesame Street, courtesy of Bruce Cayard.

Alongside the hamburger, the sandwich is one of the backbones of the American fast food industry, and a vital staple in many businesses. Scooter is first hired as a gofer on The Muppet Show to fetch coffee and sandwiches. Andy and Randy Pig are quite fond of their hero sandwiches, and the Amazing Mumford's magic phrase has long been "A la peanut butter sandwiches!"[1] Oscar the Grouch paid homage to them in the song "Oscar's B Sandwich," while Jim Henson himself contributed to the sandwich industry through his commercials for Wilson's Meats, Claussen's Bakery, Esskay Meats, and other luncheon products.

Within the Muppet realm, sandwiches have also occasionally figured as characters. In The Muppet Show episode 406, Linda Lavin asks Scooter to make her a chicken sandwich. He obliges by turning her into a Muppet sandwich. In episode 507, Pops places a telephone order for "one peanut butter and jelly sandwich... and make sure it talks!"

Muppet Sandwiches have appeared outside of The Muppet Show. A disagreeable sandwich argues with Dr. Huxtable on The Cosby Show, Barbra Streisandwich, a parody of Barbra Striesand was seen on Episode 112: Food of The Jim Henson Hour, and one of Gonzo's alien relatives briefly occupies the body of a sandwich to communicate with him in Muppets from Space. The book The Muppets Big Book of Crafts included instructions on how to construct a sandwich puppet, as designed and built by Rollie Krewson.

  1. In the Little Golden Book The Amazing Mumford Forgets the Magic Words!, it is revealed that naming other sandwiches in a magic act will create unexpected effects. While "A la peanut butter sandwiches!" will cause a rabbit to appear in a hat, "a la turkey club sandwiches" produces a duck, "a la hot pastrami sandwiches" materializes a gorilla, and "a la tuna salad sandwiches" brings forth Cookie Monster driving a train.
