Sesame Street Season 11 aired from November 26, 1979, to May 23, 1980.
Overview[]
The season introduces new educational goals pertaining to fire safety, introducing viewers to smoke detectors and proper fire drills.[1] One episode features Mr. Hooper testing out a new fire alarm for his store with the assistance of a Muppet dragon, while another show focuses on how the cast and Muppets react when they witness a team of firefighters battling a fire across the street.
Season 11 kicks off with a full week of shows where Big Bird and the gang join Maria on a visit to Puerto Rico, as well as repeating the saga of their trip to Hawaii from season 9. During the second half of the season, another story arc features the Sesame Street citizens helping Maria and Luis with the renovation of their Fix-it Shop after the two decide to expand their business with carpentry and woodwork. Other highlights include the Star Wars characters C-3PO and R2-D2 stopping by, Olivia getting her own darkroom to develop photos closer to home, a street fair, and Oscar going to the hospital after driving his racecar around his trash can.
Characters and segments[]
With production of The Muppet Show happening simultaneously in England (as well as development for The Dark Crystal), regular performers Jerry Nelson and Richard Hunt do not appear as often to fill recurring and minor roles. As a result, other performers such as Brian Muehl, Michael Earl, and Karen Prell are given a chance to develop their own characters. In addition, Muehl makes several on-camera cameos as the previously unseen Alphabet Bates, who parachutes down and write letters via telestrator as he mimics his plane's motor.
The new Muppets that appear during season 11 include Grundgetta, a new love interest for Oscar who has an adoration for trashy hats. Oscar is also kept company by Charles the Robot, whose biggest feat is the ability to roll around and fall apart, and Puerto Rican-born Osvaldo, el Gruñón (voiced by frequent Sesame guest Norberto Kerner) who shares many of the same interests as Oscar. Two characters from previous seasons return: Telly Monster, whose original TV-watching habits have been abandoned, and Poco Loco who now resides in the Fix-it Shop and is able to do more than just repeat everything. Television host Leslie Mostly interviews Sesame Street residents via satellite from their homes or workplaces, and Deena Monster arrives with only one thing on her mind: playtime. Finally, a small, red monster (first appearing during the song "We Are All Monsters") makes several minor appearances before being formally introduced in Episode 1439 as Elmo.
New recurring segments include David and Linda demonstrating various signs in which some kind of slapstick usually befalls David, brief bits where the gang plays the "rhyme game" in a Brady Bunch-esque grid, and a series of animated inserts that emphasize the geometry of circles with music written by Philip Glass.

Notes[]
- For this season, Brian Muehl is credited along with Caroll Spinney and the human cast members instead of with the other Muppet performers. Partway into the season (starting with Episode 1405), he is credited as "Brian Wolfe." Years later, Muehl revealed in an interview that he took the name "Wolfe" from a German theater couple in his family (dating to the 1880s).[2]
