It annoys Rumpel that the princess in the fairy tale "The Princess and the Pea" is so beautiful and sensitive. Samson and Annette imagine what the story would be like if it was written by a Grouch. The princess would be hairy and quarrelsome, sing absolutely hideously, like mud baths and love to sleep until one o'clock, and the pea would be replaced by at least ten cans of peas under the mattress.
