"For Me and My Gal" was first popularized by the vaudeville team of Van and Schenck, and became a standard in vaudeville acts. It gained renewed popularity as the title song of a 1942 movie starring Judy Garland and Gene Kelly.

A chicken attempts to play the song on the chimes in episode 301 of The Muppet Show.

Kelly sang the song on The Muppet Show as part of the closing medley on episode 501. Rowlf at the piano is trying to convince Gene to sing "Singin' in the Rain", but Gene keeps turning the familiar intro into different well-known songs, such as this one.

A parody of this song, "For Me and Gargoyle", was performed on episode 509. Wayne performed the first opening lines true to the original song, while the remainder was performed as a love duet with Mulch and The Gargoyle.
