I noticed that our character filmography pages are somewhat inconsistent with their section headings. Some pages have "TV shows" while others have "TV series," some say "movies" while other say "films". Nothing major, but not consistent. Before doing any bulk adjusting or clean-up, are there "standard" headings we should use for the sake of uniformity? I understand that each character's body of work is different and the filmographies won't always be 100% uniform, but I couldn't find anything in our style guides or past discussions on using "films" vs "movies" or "web content" vs "online content" for such lists. I broke down what we're currently using below.
Also we have 19 character filmography pages (10 for 'The Muppets' characters and 9 for 'Sesame Street' characters). 17 of them are organized by type of production (TV shows, movies, specials, etc), but two of them (Kermit the Frog filmography and Rowlf the Dog filmography) are simply chronological lists sorted and organized by decade. Is there a reason we're doing Kermit and Rowlf differently? -- BradFraggle (talk) 14:54, 8 October 2024 (UTC)
- As far as Kermit and Rowlf go, I checked the history. You asked to reformat Rowlf, Brad, and did so, here in 2006, and then a couple of months later you did the same to Kermit here. So that's why it's that way!
- Personally, I don't think it matters how commercials are listed, though it probably doesn't hurt to distinguish interstitials from them (which aren't actually ads, as opposed to specifically tied to networks), but "Commercials, Promos, Interstitials" just plain looks excessive.
- Overall, I personally don't think consistency as far as "Shows" and "Series" and whether someone includes TV is honestly worth being concerned about, or that this needs to be something the style guide needs to address. It will end up drifting depending on who starts them anyway. But I went ahead and changed the one on Elmo filmography just because it doesn't need to be that unwieldy (checking history again, it was that way because that's how Michael started it before Elmo guest appearances was created). -- Andrew

- Looking at the rest more closely, I likewise don't think it really matters how web content is headed or even guest appearances. Only two pages use "films" so that's easy to switch to movies, but if it shows up again later, I don't think it's worth going out of the way to police. As long as readers understand the headings and they're not too awkward, I think that's all that counts. (I like the sound of "Miscellaneous" better than "Other," personally, though). I'd personally be more concerned just with inconsistency in where to find items. Muppetisms and Muppet Moments are in "Commercials and Interstitials" on Pepe, with Miscellaneous on everyone else. At this point, probably just a stand alone "Shorts" heading for those, when they're not actually advertising anything, would work. Probably fold "Music Videos" into there too, and that would leave miscellaneous more for stuff that really is miscellaneous. Gonzo's filmography is using Miscellaneous to handle online content. -- Andrew

- Honestly, I don’t even remember why we went that way with Rowlf and Kermit back in 2006—it's been 18 years, after all. What do you think about bringing them back in line with the other filmographies now?
- As for the "Shows" vs. "Series" thing, I’m with you. It doesn’t seem worth stressing too much about small differences as long as readers can follow along, it’s not too clunky, and we avoid a tug-of-war over personal preferences. I also agree that "Commercials, Promos, Interstitials" feels like overkill. Your idea for a "Shorts" heading to cover things like Muppetisms, Muppet Moments, and most web content is a smart way to clean it up. Folding "Music Videos" in there makes sense too. There won’t always be a one-size-fits-all solution, but these changes seem reasonable to keep things from getting too messy. -- BradFraggle (talk) 22:44, 8 October 2024 (UTC)
