Hey everyone! As some may know, September 15 to October 15 is Hispanic Heritage Month in the US. The 2022 HHM theme invites us to celebrate Hispanic Heritage by reflecting on being Unidos: Inclusivity for a Stronger Nation. It also encourages us to reflect on all the contributions Hispanics have made in the past and will continue to make in the future. Click here for the full blog post.
Why now?
Sept. 15 is significant because it is the anniversary of independence for Latin American countries Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua. In addition, Mexico and Chile celebrate their independence days on Sept. 16 and Sept. 18.
What are we doing?
The official theme for this year is Unidos: Inclusivity for a Stronger Nation, with a focus to represent and welcome all voices and build stronger communities. Here at Fandom, we want to continue to amplify the voices of our community members across the diaspora through the theme of Las Voces by sharing the rich history of entertainment from the Hispanic diaspora and highlighting individuals of Hispanic Heritage who have made a global impact in IPs nationally and internationally.
- Interactive Map
We launched an Interactive Map that includes some of the most famous IPs (movies, TV series, video games), creators and artists (actors, directors, writers, singers) from a variety of Hispanic countries. Check it out on the blog!
- Editor Stories
We'll feature editors on the Community Central blog through our Creator Story series. We tell the stories of creators and community members who create the inclusive spaces on and off the Fandom platform. The stories spotlight the journey of creators and editors and how they've blazed a trail for anyone to share knowledge of the platform. Check out the first spotlights of ReverieCode (click here) and GreenWithin (click here).
- Video
Finally, we're continuing to represent and amplify the community through a special video. This video will continue to share the stories of the community, amplify voices, and encourage visibility. Stay tuned for this!
If you would rather read a book to celebrate this month, definitely check out One Hundred Years of Solitude by Gabriel Garcia Márquez, winner of the Nobel Prize in Literature. Considered one of the most influential literary works of our time, this landmark novel tells the story of the Buendia family, and the rise and fall of the mythical town of Macondo.
This is only a selection of course. We invite everyone to participate as well, so don't hesitate to reach out here or directly on the blog and tell us your story (or, the story of your favorite Hispanic-related IP)!
Scott already highlighter that Sesame Street has a long history of embracing Hispanic culture by sharing links to Plaza Sésamo, Rosita, and Maria. Don't hesitate to share more if you can think of any! Lady Lostris /
