Sonia Manzano and Oscar engaged in some light flirting at the Sesame Street at 40: A Night of Celebration with the Legendary Cast event eleven years ago. I can't remember exactly what was said, but I recall that there was some joking about a secret (innocent) love affair between Maria and Oscar sometime in the past.

As documented at Couples#Crushes, we've seen Elmo, The Count, and Herry's crushes on the human characters; has there ever been any on-screen evidence of Maria and Oscar's affections for one another? —Scott (talk) 15:24, 11 November 2020 (UTC)

Thanks, that's a good one. Within the past year, I did an episode guide for a bit where Oscar talked David into getting angry with Maria over something trivial, but now I can't find it. And I think there's also an episode where Oscar sabotages one of their dates, but I might be crossing my streams. —Scott

On a related note, here's an excerpt from Street Gang:

“During the period when Robinson was playing the front end of Snuffy, the writers created a puppy love storyline for him. It was art imitating life as the puppeteer had as big a crush on Sonia Manzano as Snuffy did on Maria. "I was able to work out feelings through Snuffy," Robinson said. "They wrote some really nice scripts about lovelorn Snuffy, and it wasn't much of a stretch for me to play. We all had crushes on her."”

Oscar always had a special relationship with Maria. He had a special nickname for her ("Skinny"), drove her to the hospital to give birth (and then secretly called to see how she was doing), and took her to his favorite Grouch restaurant (the Don't Drop Inn). Parking this info here while I'm doing the guide: Episode 0920 - Oscar gives Maria a present, but not in a sinister manner. The others tease Maria about him possibly being in love, but Oscar and Maria don't exactly deny it as the scene goes on. It's one of the most explicit scenes I've come across in the early years about their relationship so far. -- Tony
