If you've opted in to Fandom's new wiki skin (called FandomDesktop) — which is not the default yet, but will be "soon" (maybe? all they'll say is "summer") — you've seen a lot of broken content, which you're welcome to report here. I've spent the last week going through code and fixing all our tables, and hope to get to our infobox templates soon.
But, to the point of this post, I just wanted to note that galleries are still very much in flux right now. If you see them looking "off" to what they have traditionally looked like, please don't try to fix them. And if you're adding new galleries, feel free to use the style we have established over the years.
Specifically, the weirdness/brokenness in galleries applies directly to those using orientation (landscape, portrait, square) and slideshow (we use these both within tables and right-aligned on articles). By extension, this also applies to Template:landscapetable which is our own way of dynamically cropping images already on the wiki so that they look good in tables.
I've been in touch with Support Staff and have filed a ticket on this issue. I've been told that there have also been a large number of similar tickets opened from editors on other wikis. So, it's not just us. For some perspective, we use orientation on over 3,300 galleries on our articles (and there's no alternative to replace it with), so you can imagine how many articles on other wikis are also affected.
- Update: user:MisterWoodhouse has informed me that "legacy gallery syntax IS coming back while we find a better way forward for everyone. Both syntaxes will be supported when the release happens." They keep code release dates secret, so I don't know when that will be, but it's nice to be reassured that gallery orientation will work again with FandomDesktop. Also note that galleries that have been affixed with navigation="true" are already compatible with orientation, so you can see what they look like with FandomDesktop on nearly any Category:Disambiguation page. Please continue to format our galleries as we traditionally have in anticipation of its compliance with the final release of FandomDesktop. —Scott (talk) 16:48, 21 June 2021 (UTC)
