Gary Cooper (1901-1961) was an actor known for his laconic delivery and portrayal of taciturn but stalwart heroes. He won two Academy Awards for Best Actor, for High Noon and Sergeant York. While particularly associated with Westerns (including High Noon), Cooper also played morally upright everymen in Frank Capra films (Mr. Deeds Goes to Town and Meet John Doe), Lou Gherig in Pride of the Yankees, and the White Knight in the 1933 all-star Alice in Wonderland.

- Clips of Cooper in Meet John Doe were used in the fifth season Muppet Babies episode "Muppets Not Included." A speech in which Cooper talks about people "finding out that the guy next door isn't a bad egg" is trimmed to the last three words. A longer clip keeps most of a scene where "John Doe" orders lots of food through hotel room service, making Baby Piggy hungry.
