The Gawky Birds are large-scale rod-puppets, originally conceived for a live musical revue to be performed at New York's Lincoln Center, dubbed The Muppets at Lincoln Center.[1]
They were later used in occasional production numbers on The Muppet Show, including a song and dance with Bruce Forsyth in episode 113.
The Gawky Birds stand 11 feet tall, and are among the largest Muppets along with the Bossmen.
