Gilbert Stuart (1755-1828) was an American painter known for his portraits, the most famous of which, depicting George Washington, has appeared on the U.S. one dollar bill for more than a century. He painted several other portraits of Washington, as well as other historical figures including Martha Washington, John Adams, Abigail Adams, Thomas Jefferson, and King George III.
