Grey Poupon is a popular brand of Dijon mustard. Originating in France in the 19th century, the American rights were purchased in 1946. By the 1980s, the mustard became familiar through a campaign associating the condiment with luxury and ease (while noting its lower price). The original spot showed a wealthy gentleman in a Rolls-Royce lowering his window to ask a French Rolls driver, "Pardon me, would you have any Grey Poupon?"
The 1990s introduced ads spoofing the original spot and using familiar British TV actors: Ian Richardson (the original UK version of House of Cards) drives up to Paul Eddington (Yes Minister) but finds his request to borrow mustard repeatedly thwarted one way or another.
