It's Big Bird's birthday and Herry, Cookie Monster, Betty Lou, the Count, Barkley, Ernie, Bert, Susan and Gordon all gather for a surprise party. Grover enjoys being with all of his friends for the celebration, but he begins to feel unnoticed and left out when Big Bird gets all the attention on his special day. When Big Bird and Grover tie in a game of pin-the-tail-on-the-cat, Big Bird gets the prize. When everyone gets party hats, Big Bird gets the crown. Grover hopes to get the piece of birthday cake with the pink rose on it, but Big Bird gets the first piece and chooses that. Finally, no one hears Grover when he says that he made his card for Big Bird because they're all cheering for the drawing made by Ernie's cousin Fred.
When he gets home, Grover tells his mommy that he did not have a good time, and storms off to his room. That night, he dreams that it's his birthday and that he's getting all the attention, including a crown to wear and a piece of cake with a rose on it. It's a wonderful dream he thinks, until Big Bird enters the room screaming that he's lost all of his beautiful feathers, covered in a blanket and trailing yellow feathers behind him. Grover wakes up with a yell, and is cuddled by his mommy, assured that dreams don't come true.
In the morning, Big Bird is calling for Grover at his bedroom window. He came to thank him for the card and to tell him that it was his favorite. Grover runs outside and hugs his friend, happy to see that he has a full body of feathers. The two set off to play with the new toys he got for his birthday.
