Grover Goes to School is a 1982 Sesame Street storybook featuring Grover.

Grover is really excited about his first day of school in Mister Lester's class. He brings his jacks, a new pencil box and a new box of crayons, and his mommy packs him a jelly sandwich for lunch.

At school, the students introduce themselves, and Grover exclaims how he's hoping to make friends with everybody. The class begins the day with coloring, for which Grover is eager to use his new crayons. However, a student named Truman, wants to trade his toy truck for Grover's crayons. Grover is reluctant to trade, as he likes his crayons, and Truman's toy truck is missing three wheels. However, since Grover wants Truman to like him, he does agree to the trade. Grover finds the broken truck to be no fun to play with.

At snack time, the teacher serves milk and cookies, but first, he instructs the class to clean up from their coloring mess. Grover offers to take care of the whole mess himself, much to the class's delight. However, by the time he is finished, the cookies are all gone, much to Grover's dismay. At recess, Grover is eager to play hopscotch, but everyone else is jumping rope. Grover does not enjoy jump rope, but he reluctantly joins in anyway. At lunch, Truman wants to make another bad trade with Grover: this time, his baloney sandwich for Grover's jelly sandwich. Grover hates baloney, but he still grudgingly agrees to the trade.

This ends up being the last straw for poor Grover, and he bursts into tears, and vents about everything that has gone wrong for him. Another student, Molly tries to cheer him up, by inviting him to play marbles with her. Grover claims he prefers jacks, but Molly isn't familiar with the game, to Grover's further dismay. But when Molly expresses interest in learning how to play jacks, Grover is delighted, and the two play. Afterwards, the class has a writing lesson, but another student, Bill, wants to trade his less impressive pencil box for Grover's. This time, Grover stands his ground, and declines the trade, claiming that he likes his own better and Bill accepts it without getting upset. Grover asked Bill if he likes jacks, and Bill says it's his favorite game. After school, Grover, Molly and Bill play jacks and Grover ran home and told his mother that he made two new friends in one day.
