
Hans Brinker, or The Silver Skates is an 1865 novel by Mary Mapes Dodge. Set in the Netherlands, adolescent Hans Brinker and his younger sister Gretel dream of winning a skating competition for the prize, coveted silver skates, but Hans must juggle this with family obligations when their father falls ill and requires surgery. Hans continually shows responsibility by sacrificing his wants to help others.
