Harvey Fierstein (b. 1954) is a character actor and playwright who became famous in the early '80s for his Tony Award winning & semi-autobiographical play, Torch Song Trilogy. As an out gay performer, Fierstein has often played gay (or drag) roles, including Robin Williams' brother Frank in Mrs. Doubtfire, Homer Simpson's assistant Karl on The Simpsons, and his Tony-winning role as Edna Turnblad in the Broadway musical Hairspray.
Other Broadway credits include the 2004 revival of Fiddler on the Roof, a benefit concert of Hair, and the book for La Cage aux Folles. Television credits include Family Guy, Murder, She Wrote, Miami Vice, and Cheers, and the feature films Death to Smoochy, Independence Day, Woody Allen's Bullets Over Broadway and Disney's Mulan.
