"He's Got the Whole World in His Hands" is a traditional American spiritual, first published in 1927 but dating further back in the oral tradition. It celebrates how God holds the entire world, and everyone in it, in his hands. The lively upbeat song is also popular with children.
Mahalia Jackson, who recorded the song as a single in 1958 and made the Billboard 100 list, sang it to the kids on Sesame Street. (First: Episode 0029)
Cookie Monster sang the song in the Sesame Street CD-ROM Music Maker, with Ernie inserting other words into the song.
