A nameless bearded hippie character appeared during the first season of Sesame Street, often accompanied by other Anything Muppet hippies. His most notable speaking role was in the original version of the "First and Last" sketch, performed by Jim Henson, where he winds up in conflict with the early Grover. (First: Episode 0116)
As performed by Caroll Spinney, he assisted Kermit the Frog in a lecture on hair, showing off his beard. (First: Episode 0028) He also assisted in a demonstration of forward and backward, trampling the hapless lecturer in the process. (First: Episode 0069) He also participated in two first-season pop song covers, singing back-up to Bob in "Good Morning Starshine" (where he was performed by Frank Oz) (First: Episode 0003) and joining other Muppets for a party in a "Yellow Submarine." (First: Episode 0017)
The character was also seen in some early season closings, holding up the Sesame Street and CTW signs.
The puppet is reworked from the early Grump (used in The Ed Sullivan Show sketches and the Sesame Street Pitch Reel), dressed in a shaggy brown beard and a pair of glasses.
