If I Were
Music by Stephen Lawrence
Lyrics by David Axlerod
Date 1982
Publisher Sesame Street Inc.
First Episode 1676

The Renaissance-style song "If I Were," sometimes referred to as "Sonnet," was sung by Kermit on Sesame Street. In the lyrics, Kermit tells his beloved that if he were a poet or a farmer, a baker or a painter or any one of a number of other different trades, he would give her gifts associated with these trades. Although he is none of these things, he reminds her that it doesn't matter, because "I don't need a present; all I have to do is look at you to show you how much I love you."
