Synopsis[]

The residents of Sesame Street have gathered in a theatre to attend The Amazing Mumford's magic show. The audience reacts in astonishment at a number of feats, when Mumford announces that he needs a volunteer for the final trick. Several Muppets ask to be chosen, but Mumford ultimately calls up Count von Count to the stage.

Mumford asks the Count to pick a card, show it to the crowd, then return it to the deck. He then instructs the Count to think only of the number on his card and that number will disappear from a display of large cards presented on the stage. In his head, the Count counts to ten, thinking to himself how much he loves that number. When Mumford says the magic words, "A La Peanut Butter Sandwiches," the numbers on all the cards have been removed.

The audience is amazed, but Mumford frets mildly that the trick didn't go exactly as planned. When he gets to his dressing room, he's shocked to find that the numbers on all his decks of cards have gone missing. He surmises that it means the trick may have had consequences everywhere.

After the show, Ernie and Bert find that the "123" on 123 Sesame Street has been removed, The Martians attempt to read a book with no numbers, Big Bird can't find the third volume of a book series from his shelf, and Cookie Monster doesn't have numbers in his cookbook to tell him how much ingredients he should use to bake cookies. The situation is a problem for most, with the exception of Mr. Johnson who is delighted that no numbers on his menu must mean that everything is offered at no price.

Finally, The Count makes the discovery while playing hop scotch in front of his castle: despite counting his way through the blocks, he's mortified to realize that none of them have numbers. In a panic, he checks elsewhere: neither the gate to his property, nor the license plate on The Countmobile, his calendar, telephone, or clock have numbers on them. Contemplating this reality, he hears a knock at the door.

It's Mumford, who has surmised that his trick has had far-reaching effects, and sought out the Count to help rectify the situation. When the Count explains that he thought of all the numbers between one and ten in his head during the trick, Mumford works out the solution: all he has to do now is count backwards from ten, and the effects will be reversed.

Sure enough, all around Sesame Street, those who found that they were unable to see numbers anywhere, could now rely once again on written and printed digits. (This proves to be a relief for all but Mr. Johnson, who now has a hefty bill to pay for Waiter Grover). Mumford invites the Count to pick one more card... for a game of Go Fish.
