Ivan Pavlov (1849-1936) was a Russian scientist working in physiology (winning the Nobel Prize for it in 1904). His most famous accomplishment was his experiments in conditioned responses in animals, most often dogs. The conditioning often used audio stimuli, and in popular depictions, a bell is often involved.

- The character Miss Belle from The Jim Henson Hour's Dog City episode is a reference to Pavlov's conditioning experiments; her name alone causes all dogs to drool.
- In the Dog City episode "Radio Daze," Pavlov's Beef Biscuits is one of the sponsors of the radio serial It's a Dog's Life. The sound of the box shaking serves as the stimulus for a conditioned response in listeners, even Eliot Shag at his drawing board.
- A Waiter Grover sketch in which the customer must use a bell to summon a waiter is listed in scripts as "Pavlov's Waiter."
- Pavlov the Pug Dog on The Animal Show is named after Ivan Pavlov.
