Jerry Gum was part of the Muppet Workshop in the 1980s, notably working on The Muppets Take Manhattan, Fraggle Rock, and The Tale of the Bunny Picnic. He was also part of the construction team in creating walk-around versions of Muppet characters, doing such for The Muppet Show: On Tour!, Muppet Babies Live!, and Sesame Street Live shows.
A native of Monterey, Virginia, Gum graduated from Virginia Commonwealth University in 1977 with a B.A. in theater. He joined the Muppet Workshop in the summer of 1979 thanks to a recommendation from one of his instructors at New York University, where Gum was finishing his graduate studies.
