Jim Henson: Legendary Lives is an illustrated biography of Jim Henson in the Blastoff Missions series of Legendary Lives books for young readers. Unlike other some other Jim Henson biographies, illustrator Claudia Marianno depicts actual Muppet characters owned at time of print by The Walt Disney Company, The Jim Henson Company, and Sesame Workshop.
The book is hosted by a character called Blastoff Jimmy who appears throughout with additional facts about Jim Henson and the Muppets. After a two-page spread introducing Jim Henson behind the camera during the taping of The Muppet Show season one's opening, the timeline of Henson's life begins in his youth spending time with his grandmother. Henson begins his career at WTOP-TV, then attending the University of Maryland where he meets Jane Nebel and creates Sam and Friends. The following pages cover the creation of Sesame Street, The Jim Henson Foundation, The Muppet Show, The Muppet Movie, The Dark Crystal, and Labyrinth before commemorating his passing in 1990.
