Katy Perry (b. 1984) is an American singer-songwriter who is best known for her 2008 pop hit "I Kissed a Girl," and provided the voice of Smurfette for the 2011 big screen adaptation of The Smurfs.

Perry was slated to appear with Elmo on the 41st season of Sesame Street, in a music video spoofing her song "Hot n Cold." The video was posted on YouTube in advance of the new season. However, due to a number of complaints from parents questioning the appropriateness of her outfit in the video, Sesame Workshop announced that it would not be seen in the television broadcast.

She commented to Vanity Fair that she would have been very willing to change to another outfit, if there had been an objection on set. She told the magazine, that the production crew "didn't tell me there was a problem. We had 15 outfits to choose from. I would have just gone and changed."[1]

On September 25, 2010, Perry appeared on as a musical guest on Saturday Night Live, and also appeared wearing an Elmo T-shirt in a Bronx Beat sketch with host Amy Poehler and special guest Maya Rudolph, lampooning the controversy.

Starting in 2017, Perry served as a judge for American Idol; Miss Piggy attempted to steal Perry's seat during the show's 2022 "Disney Night" episode.

  • In an interview with MTV, The Muppets writer Nicholas Stoller stated that they had written a spoof of Perry's "I Kissed a Girl" as "I Kissed a Squirrel" for the film, with Miss Piggy singing the song with, "more and more squirrels are lining up to kiss her, and she's getting weirded out."[2]
